Painted in gouache and shell gold on tinted paper, this miniature evokes the Qur’ānic garden of paradise (jannah). At the top, a radiant eight-point star—symbol of the eight gates of heaven—shines through lightly pencilled compass lines. Beneath it, cypresses, plum blossoms, and curling cloud-bands frame a meandering emerald stream, one of the rivers “beneath which water flows.” Polished stones and tufts of grass lead the eye toward three sparrows, whose playful flight hints at the freedom of the soul in the hereafter. A gilt girih border encloses the scene, uniting Persian geometric order with the lush, living imagery of an eternal garden.
