Celestial Spiral of Birds

Celestial Spiral of Birds

Water-colour washes and graphite guides form a soft blue spiral—an Archimedean curve often used in Islamic manuscript margins to symbolise infinity. Four miniature songbirds, painted in the Ottoman rumi (split-leaf) style, glide along the vortex on gold tendril scrolls. The pairing of strict geometric construction and lively illumination echoes the balance of science and ornament in 16th-century Ottoman court art, while the birds’ circling flight hints at the endless return encoded in the spiral itself.
